Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 · 1984–1985

The 205 Turbo 16 is the road-going homologation special for Peugeot's Group B rally car: a bespoke mid-engined, transversely turbocharged 1.8-litre four with permanent four-wheel drive, wearing a composite body styled to resemble the humble 205 hatchback. Just 200 were built and detuned to 200 PS for the street, and collectors prize them as the civilised twin of the works T16 that took back-to-back WRC manufacturers' titles in 1985 and 1986.

The one to have: A documented, matching-numbers road-spec 205 Turbo 16 in factory grey/anthracite metallic with low kilometres, original interior and full history. All 200 road cars share the same detuned 200 PS spec, so originality and colour — not power — set the top of the market; the concours-grade, low-km grey car is the one to own.

Know the real one

Despite the 205 hatchback silhouette, the T16 shares almost nothing with the showroom 205 — it is a bespoke mid-engined steel spaceframe with a transverse 1.8-litre turbo four and permanent four-wheel drive, and the entire rear clamshell tilts up to expose the engine.
Exactly 200 road cars were built to homologate the WRC car, near-universally finished in grey/anthracite metallic; a very small number left the factory in special-order colours, and all were left-hand drive.
Value attaches to a genuine road-spec T16, not a rally car re-shelled for the street or a replica built on a 205 GTI floorpan; road cars wear body-colour trim, a civilised interior and silver Speedline wheels, with no sponsor livery. Rally-liveried competition and 'Evo 2' cars are a separate, non-road category.
Because every road car carries the same 200 PS engine — deliberately detuned from the 350-plus-PS works rally spec — originality drives price: factory grey metallic, matching numbers, low kilometres and documented history separate a concours car from a driver.
