Toyota Corolla AE86 · 1983–1987

The AE86 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive compact built around Toyota's 1.6-liter 4A-GE twin-cam four — the last rear-drive Corolla, sold in Japan as the Corolla Levin (fixed headlights) and Sprinter Trueno (pop-up headlights) and in the US as the Corolla GT-S. Collectors prize its light weight and analog balance, cemented by touge and drift culture and the Initial D 'hachi-roku', with unmodified low-mileage examples now scarce and sharply valued.

The one to have: A documented, unmodified 4A-GE twin-cam coupe — the pop-up-headlight Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (or US Corolla GT-S) with the 5-speed manual and factory limited-slip differential, ideally in the white-over-black 'panda' livery, rust-free and low-mileage on its factory 14-inch alloys. Genuinely stock survivors are the prize, because most were drifted, engine-swapped, or fitted with body kits.

Know the real one

Layout tell: front-engine, rear-wheel-drive on the AE86 chassis with the twin-cam 4A-GE. Levin wears fixed rectangular headlights; Trueno wears pop-ups. Both came as a 2-door coupe or 3-door liftback.
Market naming: Corolla Levin / Sprinter Trueno in Japan, Corolla GT-S in the US, Corolla GT (Twin-Cam) in Europe. The US SR5 shares the AE86 body but uses the SOHC 4A-C, not the twin-cam 4A-GE.
Spotting a lesser car: many 'AE86s' are actually the JDM AE85 (1.5L SOHC) or US SR5 (SOHC 4A-C) rebadged, or Initial D 'panda' replicas. Verify the 4A-GE twin-cam and the AE86 chassis stamp; unmodified cars on factory alloys are rare.
The spec that matters: the 4A-GE twin-cam with 5-speed manual and factory LSD. Documented stock coupes command a premium over the drifted, swapped, or kitted majority.
