Chevrolet Corvette L88 (C2) · 1967

The L88 was the factory race-intent option on the 1967 Corvette Sting Ray: a 427 cubic-inch big-block with aluminum heads, 12.5:1 compression and a single 850 CFM Holley four-barrel, advertised at a deliberately low 430 hp to keep it away from street buyers while producing well over 500 hp in reality. Collectors prize it as the rarest and most powerful C2 Corvette, with just 20 cars built for 1967 and values that dwarf any other Corvette of the era.

The one to have: A documented, matching-numbers 1967 C2 L88 retaining its original engine and tank sticker, ideally NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence and Bloomington Gold certified. Of the three L88 model years, 1967 is the rarest and most valuable, with only 20 built.

Know the real one

Only 20 L88s were built for 1967, the option's first and rarest year; the L88 continued on the C3 for 1968 and 1969 in larger numbers, making the 1967 C2 the most valuable of the run.
Chevrolet advertised 430 hp at 5,200 rpm, below the 435 hp L71 tri-power, specifically to steer casual buyers away; the aluminum-head 427 actually produced roughly 550-plus hp. The L88 mandated deletion of the radio and heater and could not be ordered with air conditioning.
Ordering the RPO forced K66 transistor ignition, F41 heavy-duty suspension, J56 heavy-duty brakes, G81 Positraction and an aluminum radiator; the 12.5:1 engine required racing fuel and the car left the factory with no factory choke.
Value hinges on documentation and originality: a matching-numbers engine, the original tank sticker, and NCRS or Bloomington Gold certification separate a genuine L88 from a re-created car, since the option commands several times the price of any other 1967 Corvette.
