BMW M3 (E30) · 1986–1991
The first M3: a boxed-arch, S14-powered homologation special built to qualify BMW for Group A and DTM touring-car racing, and the car that founded the whole M3 line. The Sport Evolution is the halo — a hand-assembled 2.5-liter, 238 hp final edition of roughly 600 cars whose motorsport hardware and last-of-line status drive the values.
The one to have: 1990 Sport Evolution ("Evo III") — S14B25 2.5L, 238 hp, Getrag 265 dogleg 5-speed, adjustable front splitter and rear wing, 600 built, Brilliant Red or Jet Black only.

Know the real one
Homologation tell: boxed, flared arches, a faster-raked rear glass and raised trunk line mean the E30 M3 shares almost no exterior panels with a standard E30 — only the hood carries over.
Sport Evolution ran to roughly 600 cars in 1990, delivered only in Brilliant Red or Jet Black with matching red/black interior and seat-belt accents.
Spot a lesser car: standard M3s wear the 2.3 S14 (192–200 hp); Evo II and Sport Evo add a deeper adjustable front splitter, an adjustable rear wing, and brake-cooling ducts where the front fog lights sit.
The spec that matters: 2.5L S14 (2,467 cc), 238 hp at 7,000 rpm, Getrag 265 dogleg five-speed — the peak of S14 development.
