The 288 GTO is a mid-engined, longitudinally-mounted twin-turbo V8 homologation special built to qualify Ferrari for Group B racing, with a composite Scaglietti body over a tube-frame chassis loosely derived from the 308. Collectors prize it as Ferrari's first turbocharged road car and the founding member of the F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari flagship lineage, with only 272 built.
The one to have: A matching-numbers Rosso Corsa road car carrying a Ferrari Classiche Red Book (confirming original engine and transaxle) with low, documented mileage on factory metric five-hole wheels. Originality and provenance outweigh any repaint or restoration. The five competition-only Evoluzione cars are a separate, non-road category and are not this car.

Know the real one
Longitudinal engine and a 110 mm longer wheelbase set it apart from the visually similar 308; tells include the Kevlar/composite Scaglietti body, quad round tail lights, and rear-exit exhaust.
272 road cars were built, exceeding the 200-unit Group B homologation minimum; effectively all were left-hand drive and the overwhelming majority left the factory in Rosso Corsa.
Verify the matching-numbers engine and gearbox against a Ferrari Classiche Red Book. Do not confuse the road car with the handful of Evoluzione competition cars (five built, plus a prototype), which are wilder, non-road, and a separate market; 308-based replicas also exist.
The spec that matters is originality: factory metric five-hole wheels, correct discontinued Goodyear Eagle VR50 tires, and low documented mileage on a Classiche-certified matching-numbers car command the top of the market.
