The GT350 was Carroll Shelby's race-bred reworking of the Ford Mustang fastback: a 289 cu in 'Hi-Po' K-code V8 lifted to 306 hp, stiffened and relocated suspension, a Detroit Locker axle and a stripped two-seat cabin, homologated for SCCA B-Production. Collectors prize the pure 1965 cars — one colour, minimal options and closest to competition specification — with the 34 factory 'R' racers sitting at the very top of the Mustang market.
The one to have: A documented, matching-numbers 1965 GT350 fastback in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes — the two-seat, Detroit Locker, 306 hp 289 K-code car carrying SAAC Registry paperwork and an SFM5S serial. The 34 factory 'R' competition cars are the ultimate (now seven-figure) prize; a verified 1965 street car is the attainable icon.

Know the real one
Every 1965 GT350 left Shelby American in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue rocker stripes; the over-the-top dual racing stripes were a dealer/owner-added option, not standard. Roughly 562 were built for 1965, including 34 factory 'R' competition cars.
The 1965 street car is a two-seater — a fibreglass shelf and the spare replace the rear seat — with a Detroit Locker rear axle, relocated (dropped) front upper A-arms, Koni shocks and a steep final drive. SAAC Registry documentation tied to the SFM5S serial is the value anchor.
For 1966 the GT350 gained four extra colours (Raven Black, Candy Apple Red, Ivy Green, Sapphire Blue), Plexiglas rear-quarter windows, functional brake scoops, a fold-down rear seat and an optional Paxton supercharger (11 fitted in 1966); the Detroit Locker and side exhaust became options, softening the car and widening the gap to a 1965.
Genuine cars carry a Shelby serial (SFM5S for 1965, SFM6S for 1966) alongside the Ford VIN; the many clones and 'tribute' Mustangs wearing GT350 stripes lack this, and the 'R' model is the most reproduced. Hertz rental GT350H cars are a 1966-only variant.
