Lamborghini Miura · 1966–1973

The Miura is a two-seat, Bertone-bodied coupe built around a 3.9-litre V12 mounted transversely behind the cockpit — the first series-production mid-engined road car of its type and the template for the modern supercar. Collectors prize it as the origin point of the genre, with the final P400 SV the most powerful and most developed version and by far the most valuable.

The one to have: A matching-numbers P400 SV (1971–1973): the final and most-developed Miura — 385 PS, wider rear arches over 9-inch wheels, deleted headlight 'eyelashes', and the later split-sump lubrication that separates engine and gearbox oil. The roughly 96 split-sump SVs, and the handful of US cars delivered with factory air conditioning, are the ones to hold out for.

Know the real one

Styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and shown as a bare rolling chassis at Turin in 1965 before its complete debut at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the Miura put its V12 transversely behind the seats, sharing a common casting and — on early cars — a common oil sump with the five-speed gearbox and differential.
763 were built across three variants: P400 (275, 1966–1969), P400 S (338, 1968–1971) and the top P400 SV (150, 1971–1973).
The SV is identified by the deletion of the slatted headlight 'eyelash' trim in favour of gloss-black surrounds, wider rear arches over 9-inch rear wheels, and revised tail lights; the later split-sump cars (roughly the final 96 SVs) separate engine and gearbox oil, curing the transmission-swarf bearing damage that plagued hard-driven shared-sump P400/S and early-SV cars.
The spec that matters is a genuine matching-numbers, split-sump SV; because many lesser cars have been upgraded to 'SV specification', verify SV chassis and engine numbers, and note that a small number of US-market SVs left the factory with air conditioning and command the highest prices.
