Toyota 2000GT · 1967–1970

The 2000GT is a Yamaha-built, front-engine rear-drive fastback with a 2.0-litre DOHC inline-six, produced by Toyota from 1967 to 1970 to prove Japan could build a world-class grand tourer. Collectors prize it as the first blue-chip Japanese collectible: only 351 were made, the engineering and hand-formed body rival period European exotics, and originality-verified coupes now trade well into seven figures.

The one to have: A documented, matching-numbers original coupe with the 2.0L 3M twin-cam six, five-speed manual and factory silver magnesium knock-off wheels, ideally a US-market left-hand-drive car (one of roughly 62) or a concours-grade example in Solar Red or Pegasus White. Unbroken history, correct colour and unmodified originality separate a seven-figure car from a lesser one.

Know the real one

Toyota cites 351 cars total; the series run breaks down to 233 early MF10s, 109 later MF10Ls and nine 2.3L SOHC MF12L specials, and only about 62 were factory left-hand-drive US-market cars, which command a premium.

Two open cars were cut down from coupes for the 1967 Bond film You Only Live Twice; no convertible was ever series-produced, so any open 2000GT is a special or a later conversion and the closed coupe is the collectible standard.

Yamaha built the twin-cam engine and the hand-formed steel body over a backbone-style frame; genuine cars carry 15-inch magnesium knock-off wheels, pop-up driving lamps under clear covers and a rosewood dash. The nine 2.3L SOHC MF12L cars are a distinct, rarer variant.

Value tracks originality: matching-numbers, unmodified coupes in a factory colour such as Solar Red or Pegasus White lead, and documented US left-hand-drive and concours examples set the market.
